Islamabad United Names Mike Hesson as Head Coach for PSL 9

Islamabad United has chosen Mike Hesson, a former New Zealand coach and the former director of Royal Challengers Bangalore, as the head coach for the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Under the late Dean Jones’ leadership, Islamabad United was the most successful team in the early stages of the PSL, securing two trophies in the initial three editions.

However, since Dean Jones’ passing, the team has had multiple coaches, including Misbah-ul-Haq, Johan Botha, and most recently Azhar Mahmood. Unfortunately, the team has not reached the final since 2018.

It is believed that Islamabad United has been in talks with Mike Hesson for some time, with Hesson being their top choice for the position.

The owner of Islamabad United, Ali Naqvi, described Hesson as strategic, analytical, innovative, and a great people manager, making him an ideal fit for the team. Naqvi emphasized that this appointment reflects the brand’s commitment to quality cricket and how the team is perceived by global cricket professionals.

In an official statement, Naqvi expressed his excitement about bringing a globally accomplished and premier coach like Hesson to Islamabad United. He believes Hesson’s coaching philosophy aligns with the team’s values and ambitions and is confident that his expertise will elevate the team.

Mike Hesson shared his enthusiasm about joining Islamabad United and praised the team’s professional, modern, and mindful approach. He also appreciated the team’s strategy based on the principles of Excellence, Empowerment, Education, and Environment. Hesson is looking forward to working with talented players and staff to build a successful team and provide exciting cricket to the fans.

Mike Hesson, had a successful six-year tenure as New Zealand’s head coach, leading the team to their first World Cup final in 2015. Under his guidance, New Zealand became a strong force in international cricket. He also served as the director of cricket for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2019 Indian Premier League.

The 2024 PSL season is scheduled to kick off in February and continue through the middle of March.
