Changes Expected in Pakistan T20I Opening Pair, Says Wahab Riaz

The Chief Selector of Pakistan’s men’s team, Wahab Riaz, has hinted at a possible change in the successful Pakistan T20I opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Discussions swirl around the potential alteration, sparking curiosity about the team management’s decisions for the upcoming T20I series.

In a conversation with Geo News, the former pacer emphasized the need to groom alternatives within the team. Wahab stressed the importance of giving players enough game time to assess their ability to handle the pressure of international matches.

Exploring different combinations remains a priority in the forthcoming T20I matches, with ongoing discussions to determine the best positions for players.

While acknowledging the critical role of the team management and skipper in selecting the squad, Wahab highlighted the importance of aligning with their mindset to provide the best player options. He clarified that dropping Rizwan and Babar isn’t under consideration at present for the Pakistan T20I opening pair.

Separately, batsman Fakhar Zaman disclosed his intent to bat lower down the order during the New Zealand series, adding to the competitive spirit within Pakistan’s team.

He acknowledged being a specialist opener but accepted the team management’s directive to bat in a lower position for the New Zealand tour.

Currently engaged in a three-match Test series in Australia as part of the ongoing World Test Championship, Pakistan’s team is gearing up for a swift transition to a T20I series against New Zealand, commencing just five days after the Test series concludes on January 7.
