Team India Skipper Rohit Sharma retirement from T20I cricket is confirmed, as he successfully managed to bring another World Cup title for India. The blue team beat South Africa by 7 runs on Saturday in Barbados.
Rohit Sharma retirement was announced in the post-match conference, where Captain Sharma and Virat Kholi both said goodbye to the short format of cricket as this was their last T20 World Cup.
“This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.

“I wanted this badly. Very hard to put into words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”
With 4231 runs in 159 games, Rohit is the format’s greatest scorer and leaves with the record for most hundreds (five) in T20 internationals. He has won two T20 World Cups: the first in 2007 while competing and the current one in 2024 as captain.
The news that Rohit and Kohli will be leaving the T20I format was not totally shocking. After India’s 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss, neither player has played in any Twenty20 Internationals. They didn’t start playing T20Is again until January of this year, with their eyes set on the 2024 T20 World Cup.

In 62 games as captain, Rohit amassed 1905 runs at an average of 34.01 and a strike rate of 149.76. As captain, he won 49 of the 62 games.
This is India’s second T20 World Cup championship. In the 2007 T20 World Cup, the nation defeated Pakistan in the championship match to win their first T20 World Cup title.
India’s trophy drought also comes to an end with this T20 World Cup 2024, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, they won the Champions Trophy in 2013, their previous ICC trophy.
