Pakistan Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is captain of the National T20 team and currently guiding Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) nine edition.
The captaincy of Shaheen Afridi for Cricket T20 World Cup 2024 is under some question. He represented Pakistan in the New Zealand series and the green team badly lost the series by 4-1.
Under Shaheen’s captaincy, Lahore Qalandars has been named back-to-back 2 titles of HBL PSL, But in PSL 9 the Qalandar performance not only disappointed their fans but also raised some questions about Shaheen’s captaincy.
The team has played a total of 10 matches in which Lahore Qalandars has won only 1 game against Islamabad United, Lost 8 of games, and 1 resulted in a draw.
From sources, the newly elected chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been listening to proposals for a new captain for the team and the Cricket T20 World Cup 2024.
Some think that Shaheen is too young not in a ge to handle captaincy pressure.
Other senior analysts think changing a new captain just a few steps closer to the T20 World Cup 2024 would not be a great decision. However, the last and final decision will taken by our PCB chairman.
If a new captain scenario comes, Mohammad Rizwan is in strong contention for the Pakistan T20I captain and Former skipper Babar Azam can be again appointed as captain.
The PCB chairman has not met Shaheen or any other player personally. But he had invited good players to Islamabad. After PSL, there will be changes done on various matters.
Additionally, the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play a role in a series against New Zealand next month, and the captain’s decision is still a question mark.
Meanwhile, Shane Watson has demanded a hefty sum to take up the coaching responsibilities, which amounts to millions in Pakistani rupees. Watson’s demeanor suggests that he might not be interested in taking up the role, as he does not want to stay away from his family for long periods.
PCB is insisting that Watson take on the role due to limited options, but it is unlikely that the deal will be finalized with Watson. Discussions have also been held with Mike Hesson, but he has not given a positive response yet and has asked for time to consider.
