sri lanka vs england: World Cup Champions Suffer 4th Loss in 5 Games

ICC World Cup match No.25 was played today between sri lanka vs england at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Sri Lanka had a smooth chase to 157 runs, losing only two wickets. Although they lost Kusal Perera and captain Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka (77*) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65*) formed a strong partnership of 137 runs to secure the win.

Earlier, Ben Stokes was the top scorer for England with 43 runs. However, even his efforts couldn’t save the day for England as Sri Lanka wrapped up their innings in just 33.2 overs.

Both teams had similar records, with one win and three losses. Another loss would pretty much end their chances of reaching the semifinals.

here is the ICC World Cup Points Table 2023 Update

England won the toss and chose to bat. They made a strong start, reaching 45-0 by the seventh over, but then veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews made an impact. Bowling in an ODI for the first time in a while, he got Dawid Malan out after he made 28 runs. Mathews also contributed with a run-out for Joe Root (three) and another wicket for Moeen Ali (15).

Jonny Bairstow, who scored 30 off 31 balls, became Kasun Rajitha’s first wicket of the match. England’s captain Jos Buttler and the returning Liam Livingstone fell to fast bowler Lahiru Kumara. Chris Woakes, having a tough World Cup, was dismissed for zero by Rajitha. Stokes, at the non-striker’s end, thought he was not cleanly caught, but after a review, he was given out and left the field with 43 runs off 73 balls.

England’s hopes rested on Stokes, but he holed out to substitute fielder Dushan Hemantha off Kumara, and England was at 137-8. Adil Rashid was run out in a funny way when wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis noticed he had moved too far down the wicket. Spinner Maheesh Theekshana ended the innings by having Mark Wood stumped for five.

England will face India on October 29 in Lucknow, while Sri Lanka will play against Afghanistan in Pune on October 30.
