Papua New Guinea World Cup, Second Loss Against Uganda

In the ninth match of the World Cup 2024, Papua New Guinea World Cup second lost against Uganda by three wickets on Thursday.

Uganda registered their first World Cup victory by chasing 78 runs at the Providence Stadium, Guyana, Uganda. Uganda chased down the target in the last over by 3 wickets in hand.

Riazat Ali Shah played a brilliant innings of 33 runs in 56 balls with just only one boundary.

This was Papua New Guinea World Cup second loss, Uganda lost five wickets earlier on just 26 runs but Riazat and Juma Miyagi made a partnership on the sixth wicket and brought the victory for the team. Riazat said after the match:

“It was not easy to bat on this wicket. When I was in, we lost a lot of wickets and I had to stay in. The target was not such that I had to hit big boundaries,”

“It is our first World Cup and first win of the World Cup – it is a special moment for us. Coming to the big stage is an amazing feeling, and thanks to all our supporters back home and to our fans around the world.

“Whether we were on the up or down, they have always supported us. After the first game, we were a bit down but we knew how talented we were, and we wanted to show the world how good we are.”

For PNG, Alei Nao and Norman Vanua each grabbed two wickets.

Earlier in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, Uganda chose to bowl first after winning the toss against PNG.

PNG was dismissed for just 77 runs in 19.1 overs, demonstrating the accuracy of the decision.

In a pitiful batting performance, only three PNG players reached double figures.

For Uganda, Alpesh Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta, Juma Miyagi, and Frank Nsubuga each took two wickets.

Both sides have suffered losses in their previous games going into this one. In their opening game, PNG gave it their all against the West Indies, the hosts, while Afghanistan gave Uganda a hard lesson.
