ICC World Cup 2023 match no 28 was played by bangladesh vs netherland at Eden Gardens Stadium. Netherlands stuns Bangladesh for their second win in the 2023 World Cup.
The Netherlands defended their score of 230, and Bangladesh was all out for just 142. This is the second time that Scott Edwards and his team have won in this World Cup, as they previously defeated South Africa by 38 runs.
Bangladesh faced a tough time, with their score at 70-6 within 18 overs. Van Meekeren took 4 wickets for 23 runs, causing trouble for the middle-order batsmen. Bas de Leede got rid of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had scored 35 runs. Finally, Bangladesh was bowled out for 142 in 42.2 overs.
The Dutch bowlers mixed up their speeds and used the slow pitch at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens to make it difficult for Bangladesh. De Leede took 2 wickets for 25 runs, including the key wicket of Mohammad Mahmudullah, who scored 20 runs.
Van Meekeren, named the Player of the Match, took the final wicket, leading to huge celebrations for the Netherlands. It’s a big win for them after their previous loss to Australia by a whopping 309 runs.
Edwards played a crucial role in getting the Netherlands to a respectable score in a match against Ban in CWC. He scored 68 runs to revive the innings after a shaky start, and Sybrand Engelbrecht chipped in with 35 runs. The Netherlands scored a total of 229, with some late hitting from Logan van Beek, who scored 23 not out.
“I was talking to a few of my teammates, and we thought that if we could get over 220, we would have a good chance. It’s great that our lower-order batsmen contributed and got us to what we felt was a competitive total,” said Edwards.
He also mentioned,
“I believe we did a great job with the ball and, more importantly, on the field, which had been a weak point for us in recent games.”
In terms of Bangladesh’s performance, Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan took 2 wickets each to wrap up the Netherlands’ tail. However, Bangladesh regretted allowing the Netherlands’ lower-order batsmen to add 74 runs in the final 10 overs, which pushed the Netherlands to a respectable total.
The Netherlands had a shaky start, losing both their openers within the first 14 balls after Edwards won the toss and chose to bat. However, Wesley Barresi played a crucial role by scoring 41 runs, which included eight fours, before Mustafizur Rahman dismissed him. Colin Ackermann fell for 15 runs, and Bangladesh could have caused more trouble if they hadn’t dropped Edwards twice when he hadn’t scored yet.
Taskin Ahmed removed De Leede for 17 runs, leaving the Netherlands at 107-5. But Edwards, along with Engelbrecht, managed to score his second fifty of the tournament before Mustafizur dismissed him with a wide yorker.
Bangladesh’s skipper, Shakib Al Hasan, expressed his disappointment, saying,
“I believe we bowled well, but our fielding was not up to the mark. We had a chance to restrict them to 160-170, but we couldn’t. Our batting has been quite poor in the tournament, and this was one of our worst performances. We need to regroup and finish the tournament on a positive note.”
